About the UniversityFuture students

Life at Melbourne

It's hard to get a sense of what a city or a campus will be like without visiting, but we'll do our best to introduce you to the Melbourne we know and love. With over 50,000 students and staff, and its own postcode, the Parkville campus is like a small city.

Practical considerations

As a University of Melbourne student you can get involved in the many clubs and societies on campus, take part in or watch a theatre production, attend seminars and public lectures from world renowned experts, catch a movie, a session at the gym, visit the gallery, or enjoy a coffee and chat with fellow students in one of our many cafes and food outlets. New informal learning and social facilities have added to the learning and research environments for all students.

You'll also love our dynamic city location. You may not know that the University of Melbourne is very, very close to the heart of the city. We are also a short 30 mins from the Melbourne Airport.

See? Walking distance! There are also trams right up Swanston St that will take you from Melbourne Central Station and drop you right outside the door. In fact, there are lots of public transport options that service the campus.

Parkville is next to the inner-city suburb of Carlton. It is a short walk from stylish Lygon Street, a tram ride to Melbourne's city centre, and close to the bohemian Brunswick Street, Fitzroy.

If you're not from Melbourne, you can be reassured that Melbourne is credited as one of the world's most liveable cities, a World Health Organization safe community, and is a safe place to live and study. It is Australia's second-largest and most cosmopolitan city, and is home to people from over 100 nations. Melbourne has the largest percentage of international students in the country, greatly enhancing the diversity of the student population. We've also been recognised as a UNESCO City of Literature!
