Payments and HECS-HELP
Payment of the student contribution amount can be made at enrolment (upfront), or can be deferred through HECS-HELP for eligible students.
If you are a Permanent Resident or New Zealand citizen, you must pay your student contribution amount at enrolment.
If you are eligible for HECS-HELP:
- you can pay your student contribution up-front or
- you can defer payment of your fees (the student contribution amount)
- you can nominate for each enrolment period what you will pay 'upfront' and what you will defer.
For further information see Commonwealth (HELP) Loans and Tuition Funding Policy (MPF1302) in the Melbourne Policy Library.
What is HECS-HELP?
HECS-HELP is the Australian Government's Higher Education Contribution Scheme, an interest-free loan that enables you to defer payment of your fees (the student contribution amount) then pay the loan back over time when you are working and earning more than a specified amount ($54,126 in the 2015/2016 financial year).
Under the scheme you can also choose to pay your student contribution at enrolment ('up-front').
HECS-HELP is available to eligible Australian citizens and permanent humanitarian visa holders who are enrolled in a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP).
