Please note: In September 2008, information will be sent to all Victorian secondary schools inviting nominations of current Year 10 students for inclusion in to the Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program. The Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program is an academic enrichment program designed to support high-achieving Victorian secondary school and select New South Wales and South Australian Year 11 and 12 border school students. The program offers numerous opportunities for students to interact with the University and each other, with substantial benefits for students who subsequently enrol at the University of Melbourne.
The program is named in honour of the eminent scholar, leading educationalist and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne: Professor Kwong Lee Dow.

Benefits for participants
Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars enjoy exclusive access to:
- study skill sessions;
- a career-focussed activity;
- tailored on-campus events including academic, social, cultural and sporting activities;
- dedicated functions during key events such as Open Day and Course Information Day;
- dedicated portal on the University of Melbourne website, comprising information relevant to their secondary studies and further study opportunities, student blogs and social activities; and
- the University of Melbourne's library - the largest library collection in the southern hemisphere with an "Approved Borrower" library student card.
Upon enrolment at the University of Melbourne, Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars will be eligible for:
- a Commonwealth supported place in the New Generation degree of their choice*, conditional upon achievement of an ENTER of 95, or 90 and above if the student is from an underrepresented school (subject to meeting prerequisites and any course requirements);**
- a $2,500 allowance to assist with costs of settling in Melbourne. To be eligible a student's home address must be interstate or within one of the Victorian Government's designated rural councils. Please visit the Local Government Victoria's Department of Planning and Community Development website to identify Victorian councils which are zoned as rural;
- Participation in the Kwong Lee Dow First Year Program during first year of enrolment at the University which features ongoing opportunities for interaction and optimises development of academic and leadership potential and capacity for active citizenship and community involvement; and
- a $2,500 Study Abroad Scholarship (payable in second or third year of University study) to enable participation in an International Mobility program during their studies at the University of Melbourne.
*Students must be eligible for Commonwealth Supported Places in order to avail themselves of this benefit i.e. Australian Citizens, Australian Permanent Residents, New Zealand Citizens, and holders of Permanent Humanitarian Visas for Australia. International guaranteed entry requirements will apply to International Students participating in the Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program.
Should a Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholar wish to study one of the University's existing degrees, they will need to achieve an ENTER competitive for entry.

Eligibility and selection
- Later in 2008, the University of Melbourne will contact the Principals of every Victorian secondary and select New South Wales and South Australian border schools to request nominations of outstanding current Year 10 students going in to Year 11 in 2009.
- The University of Melbourne will select at least one student from each school to participate in the Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program. Up to 700 Year 10 students who will commence Year 11 in 2009 will be selected.
- Students selected as Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars as Year 10 students retain their status as a Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholar through their Year 11 and 12 studies and the first-year of University should they choose to enrol at the University of Melbourne.
- Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars can apply for any other University of Melbourne scholarships for which they are eligible. Please refer to the Melbourne Scholarships website.
- Participants will be selected on the basis of a recommendation from their school and the student's own academic performance and leadership skills. The University particularly encourages nomination of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
