US financial aid
As a US citizen you may be eligible to apply for a US Direct Loan from the US Department of Education to help cover the cost of your higher education. You can apply for one of these loans if you will be enrolling in a Bachelor, Masters or Doctoral program at The University of Melbourne.
As a recipient of a US Direct Loan, you will be subject to certain responsibilities. Here is some information to help you ensure that you meet these responsibilities:

Eligibility for US Financial Aid
The University of Melbourne is accredited by the US Department of Education to administer the US Direct Loan Program (US Financial Aid/ Federal Loan Program) to US citizens or eligible non-citizens who are:
- Enrolled at least half-time (25 points per semester is half-time for Semesters 1 and 2. Melbourne Business School students must be enrolled in 25 points per Term. All subjects undertaken must be required subjects for the completion of your enrolled course.)
- Enrolled in a full degree program- i.e. Bachelor, Masters or PhD (The University cannot certify federal loans for students undertaking graduate certificates, graduate diplomas, postgraduate certificates, postgraduate diplomas or Master of Nursing courses. Students enrolling in any of these courses may be eligible for private education loans.)
- Not enrolled in an Exchange/ Study abroad program in the United States.
- Not enrolled in any online courses.
- Making Satisfactory Academic Progress.
- Are not completing research based in the United States (Master's and PhD students).
- Have never have been convicted of an offence in relation to the sale or possession of a controlled substance.
- In compliance with Selective Service registration requirements if you are male and aged 18-25.
- In compliance with requests for documents that are listed on your Student Aid Report.
- Not in default on a student loan of any type.
- Never have been convicted of an offence in relation to the sale or possession of a controlled substance.
- File a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
- Pass a credit check for Direct PLUS loans.
- Submit all documentation required by the University of Melbourne to check your eligibility.
