How to apply

Step 1: Confirm your eligibility

To be eligible for the University of Melbourne Extension Program, you must:

  • Be eligible for the award of the VCE (or IB) in the year you intend to participate
  • Be undertaking a normal full-time VCE (minimum five VCE Units 3/4) or its equivalent;
  • Achieve A/A+ grades in the prerequisite subject/s
  • Achieve a B+ average across all other Year 11 subjects. Selection criteria for most Extension Program subject areas requires that the average of Year 11 results across all non prerequisite subjects equates to no less than a B+ (students are not required to achieve a B+ in every subject, but rather the average of all non-prerequisite Year 11 subjects must equate to a B+)
  • Have the recommendation of your School Principal.

The Extension Program is open to both domestic and international Year 12 students in Victoria. If you enrol in Extension Program studies, you are required to have at least one VCE Unit 3/4 enrolment during the year in which you undertake the Extension Program.

Music applicants

In addition to the eligibility information above, Extension Program Music students must possess exceptional ability, well beyond the Faculty of Music's entrance audition standard (usually a B at AMEB Grade 7).

For example:

  • You have passed an L Mus A with distinction;
  • You have been a finalist in a national competition (for example, the ABC Young Performers Award);
  • you have appeared professionally as a soloist with a major concert promoter (for example the ABC, or Musica Viva)

You must also submit a letter of recommendation from your music teacher outlining your aptitude and achievements. If the letter of recommendation indicates that you are of an appropriate standard, you will be invited to an audition at the School of Music — Parkville, in late November/early December. If you successfully complete an audition and also achieve the required B+ average grades across your other Year 11 studies, you will be offered a place in the Extension Program.

Step 2: Research and choose the subject area you wish to apply for

There are 17 subject areas available. You can choose only one to study. See the full list of subject areas.

When considering your Extension Program subject area it is important that you consider:

  • What the subjects are about and if you will enjoy them
  • The timetable and the number of contact hours
  • The class location and the ease of transport to and from classes
  • What kinds of assessment the subjects involve and
  • Whether you will meet the prerequisite requirements.

Step 3: Seek school and parent or guardian permission

Before applying for the Extension Program it is important that you seek permission from your school and your parent or guardian.

Undertaking the Extension Program requires considerable commitment and you should discuss responsibilities such as your Year 12 studies, sport and part-time work with your support network. Your school and your parent or guardian will be able to guide you in making the best decision and provide you with the best advice to ensure that you complete your Year 12 studies successfully.

The Parent/Guardian Permission Form and the Teacher Recommendation and Principal Approval Form must be completed and submitted in support of your online application. Please follow the instructions on these forms carefully to ensure that your application is complete.

Step 4: Submit an application

Once you have established that you are eligible for the Extension Program, you will need to submit an application online. While submitting your application ensure that you refer to the Instructions for Applicants and complete each step carefully.

It is important that you complete all application requirements, including uploading (or submitting) the Parent/Guardian Permission Form and the Teacher Recommendation and Principal Approval Form*. Your application is not complete until you have provided answers to all mandatory questions, submitted all required supporting documentation, and you have clicked the ‘Submit’ button and the ‘Confirm’ button.

Please note that applications for the 2012 Extension Program will now remain open until Friday 25 November.

*Music applicants: In addition you must attach a letter from your music teacher which addresses, in detail, how you meet the selection criteria for exceptional achievement in music. Refer to the above 'Music applicants' section for more information.

Step 5: Submit your results

All applicants will receive an acknowledgment email from the University in late November.

You are required to provide a copy of your semester one and two Year 11 school reports, accompanied by a key that defines the grading system used by your school by Friday 16 December 2011.

When you are completing the online application you can give permission in Requirement 13 for the University to obtain results for any VCE Units 3/4 subjects studied in Year 11 directly from the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA). You therefore will not be required to send results for any Units 3/4 subjects in to the University in December, unless you do not grant this permission in your application.

Note: If you will be away in December you must make arrangements for another person to submit your Year 11 results to the University on your behalf. It is your responsibility to submit results by the deadline. Late submission of results will only be considered in special circumstances.
