Conditions for Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars participants
The following are the conditions for being eligible to receive:
- a place in a Melbourne degree
- a $2,500 relocation allowance
- a $2,500 Melbourne Global Mobility Scholarship
Conditions for being eligible to receive a place
The University of Melbourne can guarantee you a place provided that you:
- achieve an ATAR equal to or greater than:
- 95.00; or
- 90.00 if you have undertaken Year 12 at a Victorian school defined by the University of Melbourne as underrepresented in the tertiary sector and at the University of Melbourne. Please see our list of under-represented schools. Please note that this list is updated in August each year.
- apply for one of the following University of Melbourne New Generation degrees through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC), and are eligible to receive an offer for the selected course through the VTAC selection system2:
- Bachelor of Arts
- Bachelor of Biomedicine1
- Bachelor of Commerce
- Bachelor of Environments
- Bachelor of Science
- meet the entry requirements for the course (i.e. prerequisites and course requirements).
2. Entry cannot be guaranteed into the Bachelor of Music as selection takes into consideration a range of criteria including an audition and musicianship test. Guarantee does not include Chancellor's Scholars Programs. International Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars are subject to the international guaranteed entry requirements.
Greg attends a school that is on the University's under-represented school list. As such, to take advantage of this policy Greg needs to achieve an ATAR greater than or equal to 90 and meet all of the prerequisites for the New Generation course he wishes to study (as outlined at Course Search).
He selects Commerce as his first University of Melbourne preference on VTAC. Greg achieves an ATAR of 93.50 and meets all of the prerequisites for the course.
Because he is a Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholar, Greg would know at the time that ATARs are released (mid December) that his place in the Commerce course is secure, regardless of what the Clearly-In Rank ends up being. Greg would receive a formal letter of offer into the course in Round 1 of University offers (January).
In mid-late February, Greg would receive an official invite to participate in the Kwong Lee Dow First Year Program. Greg begins studies as a University student in March.
Ty attends a school that is not on the University's under-represented school list for that year's entry. As such, to take advantage of this policy Ty needs to achieve an ATAR greater than or equal to 95 and meet all of the prerequisites for the New Generation course he wishes to study.
He selects Science as his first University of Melbourne preference on VTAC. Ty achieves an ATAR of 87.00 and meets all of the prerequisites for the course.
As Ty did not achieve an ATAR greater than or equal to 95, he must wait until Round 1 offers are released (January) to see whether his ATAR is high enough to receive a course offer for Science.
Suzie attends a school that is not on the University's under-represented school list. As such, to take advantage of this policy Suzie needs to achieve an ATAR greater than or equal to 95 and meet all of the prerequisites for the New Generation course she wishes to study.
Suzie selects Biomedicine as her first University of Melbourne preference on VTAC. Suzie achieves an ATAR of 95.80; however she does not meet the prerequisites for the course i.e. received a study score of 23 in Chemistry where a score of 25 is needed.
Even though Suzie's ATAR is very competitive for Biomedicine and higher than the ATAR specified for Young Scholars, as she has not met all of the prerequisites for Biomedicine, the University is unable to select her into the degree.
Subsequently, Suzie receives a Round 1 offer in January to study her second University of Melbourne preference: Science.
Example 4: Ben doesn't achieve an ATAR higher than 95 (or 90 if from an under-represented school) and is selected into a University of Melbourne course
Ben does not need to achieve an ATAR of 95 (or 90) to participate in the Kwong Lee Dow First Year Program. All Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars who are enrolled in first-year of their University of Melbourne undergraduate course, regardless of their ATAR, will be invited to participate in the First Year Program.
