UK Financial Aid
Career Development Loans
Career Development Loans (CDLs) are a long standing program available within Great Britain intended to help remove the financial barrier to learning.
A CDL is a deferred repayment bank loan designed to help individuals pay for vocational education or learning.
A CDL can be used to fund any full time, part time or distance learning course as long as it is vocational (ie gives the applicant the skills needed for an occupation, trade or profession) and lasts no longer than 2 years. The learning provider must be registered with the CDL administrators. The University of Melbourne is a registered CDL learning provider.
The Department for Education & Skills pays the interest on the loan for the period covered by the CDL and for one month afterwards. The recipient of the loan then starts making repayments to the bank in accordance with their loan agreement.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- be aged 18 or over at the time of application
- be a resident in Great Britain
- not have reasonable or adequate access to funds to pay for the course other than a CDL
- intend to work within the European Union once they have finished their course.
