"I will investigate current musical practices."

"When I visited Australia a year ago, I was surprised to find I was already familiar with a large number of the tunes popular there", says Sytske Hillenius. A violinist, Sytske will spend 18 months in Australia examining the musical and social history of folk dance and music in Tasmania.

"The project will examine the musical and social history of a transplanted but now assimilated tradition in Tasmania, the destination of many of the earliest settlers and convicts", she says. "I will also investigate current musical practices and how they have been affected by and interact with the Global Celtic Sound – music stemming from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Brittany that has become globalised through colonisation and media development."

The prestigious Fulbright program is the largest educational scholarship of its kind, created by US Senator J William Fulbright and the US Government in 1946. Aimed at promoting mutual understanding through educational exchange, it operates between the US and 155 countries. In Australia, the scholarships are funded by the Australian and US Governments and corporate partners, and administered by the Australian-American Fulbright Commission in Canberra."

"Melbourne is the top uni in Australia for veterinary medicine."

"I’ve always loved animals. When I realized the University of Melbourne was the top uni in Australia for veterinary medicine, and it was the best city in Australia, I had to apply!

I most enjoy the variety of professors; they come from different parts of the world and I get to experience different ways of teaching. Also, I absolutely love hearing different perspectives of the world.

I love that Melbourne is full of surprises, whether it’s a secret bar, an interesting alleyway, a fun festival, or even the weather. There’s always something new to do! The city really caters to everyone’s interests whether it’s sports, art, music, dance, theater, food, cocktails, outdoors, animals, etc. You’re never bored."

"After much research, the University of Melbourne was an easy choice."

"Studying at Melbourne University is an opportunity to truly maximise my potential. It makes a world of a difference to be taught by some of the best. The discussions and ideas communicated are challenging in the most enriching and thrilling ways. In my first semester at Melbourne, I was challenged in ways that I had not been previously. I have grown in thought as well as behaviour. That, truly, has been an absolutely invaluable experience."

"I immediately fell in love with the University and this city."

When I first arrived in Melbourne, I immediately fell in love with the university and this city. I was amazed at how welcoming people were and at what lengths they would go to making my transition to Melbourne easier.

I have been privileged to work under the guidance of two incredible geologists. Most importantly they are great people who have perpetually had my best interest at heart and have always treated me as a colleague.

The highlight of my experience thus far, is the level of independence that I have within my work. This has allowed me to pursue different leads in my research, which has in turn made me a more well-rounded geologist and further developed my professionalism."

"I feel very privileged to be a part of the Melbourne Law School student body"

"I wanted my legal education to be a fulfilling academic experience that would challenge me personally and assist my professional development. The Melbourne JD has exceeded those expectations. The seminar style format of teaching provides an opportunity to interact with world class academics on a personal level. These lecturers are some of the best teachers I have ever had. They make an extraordinary effort to ensure that you are not just a student at Melbourne Law School, but that you are a part of an academic community that is committed to learning and growth. I feel very privileged to be a part of the Melbourne Law School student body. It is exceptionally intelligent, incredibly dynamic, and deeply engaging"

Our Graduates

"As challenging as anything I’ve encountered in America."

Ben White studied the innovative Executive Master of Arts (EMA) graduate program and says, "While I’ve consistently found both my course material and life in Melbourne stimulating, my favorite part of my course has always been my classmates. The unique, rather open-ended nature of the course, combined with the reputation of the University, meant that it drew student from a very large, diverse group of backgrounds and disciplines.

On how well the course has prepared him for future employment, he says, "The material I’ve studied is every bit as rigorous and challenging as anything I’ve encountered in America or elsewhere, and the network I’ve developed spans across the globe. I truly feel that the skills and experiences I’ve gained throughout my time in Australia and at the University of Melbourne have prepared me for a career anywhere I want to go."
