International School Counsellors and Teachers

The University of Melbourne welcomes international schools

We know it’s important for school counsellors and teachers from schools outside Australia to have easy access to tailored information about the University, which is why we have developed this online resource to ensure you stay up to date.

The Melbourne curriculum model

The Melbourne curriculum is flexible but focussed. At the undergraduate level, students can choose a specific major (or two) from day one or keep their options open to discover new and exciting possibilities along the way. With over 100 majors to choose from, students can focus on whatever they are passionate about. The 3 year curriculum includes:

  • Compulsory subjects: taken by all students enrolled in the degree
  • Major subjects: taken by students studying the same major
  • Elective subjects: choose electives that suit interests from a select list relating to the major
  • Capstone subjects: taken in the final year, designed to consolidate learning. May include a practical, real life project or work experience
  • Breadth subjects: Choose subjects outside of the core study area

"I chose to study at the University of Melbourne not only due to its location but also due to its high standard of education in the field of science"

"I chose to study at the University of Melbourne not only due to its location (Melbourne being a safe, peaceful yet vibrant city to live in) but also due to its high standard of education in the field of science offered in the University, as shown by its impressive and consistently high rankings within the world’s universities.

The best thing about my course was getting to know so many of lecturers that have so much enthusiasm in their fields of interest and indeed science in general. Although many of them are very busy with their roles within the university, including administrative work and postgraduate supervision, they almost always take the time to meet with students who have questions and reply emails promptly. This really improved the quality of education I received and was a source of great inspiration to me.

Having never lived alone in a foreign country before, the first couple of weeks in Melbourne were a little daunting and uncomfortable, but it didn’t take long for me to get used to the lifestyle here. The first few months at the University of Melbourne was very smooth, and the university provided resources and assistance for any questions that I had, both in terms of education and in terms of living in Melbourne in general."
